With what he drank, with how he was beating himself up... that was probably a long-ingrained vice of his, a tendency to deliberately hurt himself as some form of penance, maybe? Some sense that there needed to be justice or fairness, but he could only punish himself? Hamuko didn't know the specifics, didn't know him specifically well enough, but the effect was the same.
It left the person that would depend on him the most to watch him hurt himself. It probably wasn't the first time, but this was a pretty extreme example. It hurts to see the people you care about falling apart, and... possibly losing them as a consequence for it.
